I sailed as a sea captain all around the island, including Pemba island. I spent here almost 2 months altogether. From tourist places, I liked Nungwi beaches. You have to know, most of tourist resorts are situated outside of local civilization. If you want to go shopping or to the local restaurant, you need to order a taxi everytime and the prices are high. The food and alcohol is quite expensive even for europeans. The locals are kind, although sometimes annoying if they are selling something. I felt absolutely safe, more than in EU. Traffic in the inlands is terrible, try to avoid travelling on these roads. Negotiate the price (taxi etc) before drive. They are able to ask 50 USD for 3 kilometres of ride after. If I could decide, I would try another exotic islands. Zanzibar needs 5-10 years to improve the services for tourist, infrastructure etc.

Navigating Zanzibar City was surprisingly easy, with an array of transportation options available. The compact size of the city made it convenient to explore on foot, with many attractions within walking distance of each other. I would definitely suggest trying the local Swahili food for fresh fish and seafood.
For a visitor from South Africa, I found the price of food and drinks at restaurants relatively expensive.

Paradise Found: Zanzibar's Enchanting Beauty
Paradise Found: Zanzibar's Enchanting Beauty
Zanzibar is simply one of the best places on Earth. Its beaches are nothing short of breathtaking, with pristine sands so fine they feel like silk beneath your toes. The tranquil waters, gentle and calm, create a mesmerizing backdrop that captivates the soul. My love for this place knows no bounds; it's a sanctuary of unparalleled beauty and serenity.

It was lovely and we got to see the history of the slave trade (albeit sadly as it was a horrendous practice). The beaches are also very beautiful (Jambiani Beach was where we mostly went.) The spice farm tour and markets were lovely as we got all kinds of fresh spices.
However, it is very tourist-centric. Payment is in dollars everywhere and people are always trying to sell you something. Feels very commercialised.

Dirty, smelly, full of approaching ~beach boys, sellers and beggars. Much more aggressive than up north. Mostly came for a Nakupenda tour. Nice place but be aware that it’s crowded - by lots of tourists and then of course even the aggressive up in your face wanting to touch you sellers there too.
The more upscaled beach hotels and restaurants are nice though.
I have booked this place only to have a chance to sleep for 5-6 hours. I came to Zanzibar at night around 4am so until I could go and check in to other hotel near the beach I decided to find something cheap and close to airport to get some sleep so I only stayed at this hotel for 5 hours so I cant say much. But the receptionist were nice and room is ok. If its just for 1 night to stay near airport because you need its fine, otherwise for longer stay in too far from city center and there is nothing around that much near hotel.
We absolutely loved our stay at Emerson on Hurumzi. All the staff are so professional and genuinely friendly, the hotel and the rooms are beautifully designed, and the location is great, right in the middle of the city.
We experienced the rooftop dinner on our first night and it was one of the highlights of our holiday. The food was excellent and the atmosphere among the guests, staff, and entertainers was unforgettable.
If you're planning to stay in Stone Town, then Emerson on Hurumzi is your only option!
We stayed at the hotel after our flight from France as we felt it was useless to drive one hour to our holiday destination late in the evening. The hotel is located two minutes drive away from the airport. Staff was very welcoming and pleasant, room comfortable with a very nice bed, great bathroom with italien walk in shower, nice terrasse and pool area. A great hotel for a night after or before your flight or if you want a modern hotel in Zanzibar city with easy access to Stone town. Very good value for money.
Absolutely everything, this hotel is like a secret surprise in Stone Town, a MUST STAY for anyone in Stone Town for a couple of nights. Food is excellent, bar is wonderful and fabulous cocktails - best in Zanzibar so far we have tried! Peter in the Bar is wonderful, Krishna the manager is super helpful, and the Spa is a must do - absolute heaven. we will stay here every time we come to Zanzibar!! we truly felt special in every way, super attentive and accommodating to the guests! Great Team!
Unbelievable place, even nicer than the photos, the best little refuge to stay at in Stone town!! You're 10minutes from the city center but feel like you are in this calm oasis with a beautiful garden and all the comfort and welcoking staff. Couldn't recommend it enough, and the crazier part is the price!! Worth 10 times what you pay, definitely the best value for money I've ever seen! Make sure you stay more than one night to enjoy fully, I wish I'd stayed in that garden forever
The hotel is right on the edge of all the happenings in stone town, it is reachable by car/taxi, so you do not have to walk with luggage. Everything inside the little windy roads of Stone Town can be reached good by foot from the hotel. The owner also arranges tours and taxis. The room was pretty big, but mostly empty. It does serve the purpose of sleeping there, but otherwise it has not much to offer. The balcony is pretty, but that's it.
Nice hotel right on the beach and next to the port.
Great location with everything in easy walking distance from the hotel.
Our room was spacious and clean with a huge ornate bathroom.
Beds were big and comfortable. TV, Fridge and a Kettle in the room with some tea and coffee provided.
Breakfast was ok.
The pool was nice with plenty of shaded areas and a great way to cool off after walking around the back streets of Stone Town.
Great value for money. The hotel location is in the center of stone town, close to a school and local residencies which makes you feel a part of the city. There are sirens at 6:30am&pm which indicate the beginning and the end of the day and also you will hear the call for prayer at around 5:30am etc.
This was a good hotel for our purpose and that's traveling to the mainland. The ferry is very close to the hotel.
We’ve really enjoyed our stay at the Cofffee House! The staff was amazing, the food and coffee were delicious. Everybody is so friendly and helpful.
The hotel arranged all our activities, we highly recommend to do the tour in Stone Town with a local guide to really get to know the city and the culture. The snorkeling at Chumbe Island is also great.
Thank you so much for everything, wish we stayed there longer!
really excellent location right on ‘jaws corner’ but still spacious enough rooms and private bathroom - valuable commodity for this price range in stone town! staff were friendly and housekeeping staff were particularly accommodating and did a great job. the hotel has a rooftop bar which has well priced food and drink as well as a good breakfast.
The personnel was very helpful and available.
They helped us with everything, suggesting to us restaurants, places to visit in Stone Town and storing our luggage after checkout so we could walk around the city luggage-free until the time we had to travel to Nungwi.
To sum up, everything was very very very nice at Rumaisa hotel
Hotel situated in a historic building in Stone Town, close to all major attractions within walking distance. The room we stayed in was very spacious and decorated with antique furniture that gave it a special touch. The pool area is very nice and the terrace has a great view of the city.
Second time during our 4 days in zanzibar and we opted to rebook the hotel for our stay in stone town. .
They did upgrade us to the family room which was so lovely 😍.
The staff were still amazing and helpful especially Rashid .
Definitely 💯 would recommend the place anytime .
Hotel Tembo is great, right on the beach with two pools. We stayed in the associated B&B, a short walk away once you know the route. We were on the top floor in a large studio where we were very comfortable.
We had access to the hotel facilities including breakfast with a view.
This hotel has a great location. It is close to the beach and all the major sights in stone town. Rooms are comfortable and clean and I looked forward to breakfast everyday. Very nice spanish omelets.
The staff were excellent, the hotel is beautiful, and the breakfast on the rooftop was lovely. I have stayed several places in Stone Town and Kisiwa House had good amenities and wonderful staff.
Great location for exploring Stone Town or watching the sunset on the beach. balcony or pool, interesting architecture and furnishings, attentive staff.
